Just past the one-year anniversary of the album’s release, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors brought their “Medicine” tour to the sold-out Troubadour on Wednesday for a night finely honed Americana and neighborly (Tennessee-style) conversation. Not lost on Holcomb was the fact he playing a stage that over five-plus decades has been inhabited by a lot of his heroes. “There’s so much history here,” he said. “And if you don’t know what I’m talking about, you need to go do some research.”
The crowd was well-versed in Holcomb’s catalog. The show was bookended by selections from “Medicine” — “American Beauty” and “Tightrope” at the start, “Shine Like Lightning” to wrap the main set and “Here We Go” to finish the encore. Holcomb dedicated many of the songs to his wife Ellie, who originally was in the band, and relayed the story about how “You’ll Always Be My Girl” was written while spending a night at home with his infant daughter.
Fellow Tennessean Sean McConnell opened the night with a rapturous solo set.
