Stream: EFG, ‘Outlier’

“Outlier,” the latest (and maybe greatest) single from L.A. trio EFG, has a strong autobiographical thread. In the four-plus years since singer-guitarist Imaad Wasif and drummer Josh Garza began collaborating (and three years since producer/bassist Tom Biller joined the fold), they seem to have spent a lot of time on the outside looking in. EFG’s more muscular, nuanced and heady psych-rock sets them apart from the masses, and “Outlier” (available on a 7-inch with “Suzanne” being released April 1 via Bodan Kuma), takes the trio into even more mystical territory. Biller says EFG’s new music is the result of a lot of studio improvisation, which resulted in ” waves of wonder, ecstatic truths and mutilation.” “We’re outliers we’re told / but we can’t feel a thing,” Wasif sings, punctuating the sentiment with a guitar lick that makes you feel everything. Wasif told Interview magazine, where the song premiered: “I find a solace in knowing there will always be a world for those who take the path of resistance. We’re all outsiders in some way or another.”
