Fitz & the Tantrums

Fitz & the Tantrums have shown they can make bodies move, on their first album with a charming touch of old-school soul and on their second as mainstream new-wavers. Now they want to induce a “HandClap,” or a bunch of them. That’s the first single and the lead track from Fitz’s self-titled third album, out June 10 via Elektra Records. Today’s album announcement comes with plans for a 37-date summer tour (no L.A. dates yet, though). “HandClap” is a hooky, true-to-formula dance number, although frontman Michael Fitzpatrick would like you to believe there’s a little more. “‘HandClap’ is a primal tale of love and lust, a call to arms in the late hours of the night,” he says. “It’s the X-rated version of ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ happening on a dance floor.” The album is the follow-up to 2013’s “More Than Just a Dream,” which boasted the hit singles “The Walker” and “Out of My League.” The band — Fitzpatrick along with singer Noelle Scaggs, saxophonist James King, keyboardist Jeremy Ruzumna, bassist Joseph Karnes and drummer John Wicks — worked largely with producer Jesse Shatkin (Sia, Matt & Kim) on the new album. Shatkin produced eight songs, with Fitzpatrick, Joel Little (Lorde) and Ricky Reed (Jessie J) producing one each.
