Video: The Frights, ‘Kids’

Remember the days of being a know-it-all spoiled brat? The Frights sure do. The San Diego surf-punks – Mikey Carnevale (vocals/guitar), Richard Doston (bass), and Marc Finn (drums) – sound like ’50s doo-wop got drunk and rolled around in the gutter with ’90s grunge, emerging with a fresh sound that flirts with, but doesn’t rely on, nostalgia. Fellow SoCal punk and FIDLAR vocalist Zac Carper produced their second full-length album, “You Are Going To Hate This” (out now via Dangerbird Records) after the Frights toured with the L.A. darlings. Lead single “Kids” delves deep into growing pains, a common theme throughout the album. “Have you ever felt the pressure building in your brain / Growing up is suicide and it’s making me insane,” wails Carnevale on the post-adolescent anthem. The band took a DIY approach to the video and created everything, including the hand-drawn props, on their own. According to Carnevale, “Kids” is “about living with your parents and hating them and being a brat and once you’re finally out on your own you realize how hopeless you are and how they were right.” Who knew that missing mom and dad could be so punk?
