Right down to its detached, Pixies-like skeleton, the Big Gone’s new single “Hope Machine” is about seeking clarity amid the clamor of cultural detritus. The song, off the L.A. trio’s forthcoming EP “Dubious Luxury,” rumbles along chin-on-the-chest while singer-bassist Claire Woolner wonders “What’s a girl gotta do to get free?” The latest from Woolner, guitarist-singer Nick Sena and drummer Will Geer, the song found its seed in the writings of folk legend Woody Guthrie. Woolner found some of his maxims online — “take bath,” “learn people better” and “don’t get lonesome” were among them — and arrived at Guthrie’s imperative “Keep hoping machine running.” The song took shape the next day in the trio’s studio, where, they say, the mood was a bit dark. “Hope machine / Keep my thoughts running,” the song pleads at the end. Amen.
