There’s desperation in Lexie Papilion’s voice on her new single as Bloodboy, “Hey Kid.” It’s the pain of witnessing someone close slip into the jaws of addiction, of looking into “eyes so red” and feeling helpless.

“In the early stages of addiction, it’s easy as an onlooker to turn a blind eye — to make excuses for the erratic behavior or write it off as something else,” says, Papilion, the O.C. native and 25-year-old former competitive surfer who debuted earlier this year with the single, “Human Female.” “As it begins to consume the person, in this case manifesting itself in the form of paranoia, violent behavior, and complete emotional absence, it becomes a little more difficult to deny. There were nights I avoided answering my phone because I was terrified it would be someone calling with news that something terrible had finally happened. I guess, fundamentally, ‘Hey Kid’ is about watching someone you love self-destruct and having no fucking clue how to help them.”

Co-produced by Thom Monahan (Peter, Bjorn, and John), it’s the second single off Bloodboy’s debut EP, due this fall.
