Bishop Briggs last week fired another bullet from the chamber of her trove of electro-soul paroxysms. “Pray (Empty Gun)” is the fourth single from the L.A.-based singer, born in London, schooled in Tokyo and Hong Kong and allied with producers Mark Jackson and Ian Scott. It was one of the highlights of her June show at the Troubadour, and it’s a nifty exercise in production making space for a singer who can really emote. The modern flourishes are there — a treacly cascade of synth, swallowed-by-robots response vocals, electronic percussion that sounds like distant gunfire — but never do they obfuscate Bishop Briggs’ entreaties. The kids who saw it on MTV’s “Scream” loved it, and we do too, even if we suspect there’s an acoustic guitar or piano version we’d like even better.
