“Can my logic counter my fear of being dumb and strange?” sings King Shelter‘s Taylor Hecocks in “Preoccupy.” The Connor Buss-directed video follows him and bandmates David Noble, John Harzan, and Adam Nienow attempting to navigate the blurry streets of the L.A. underground, where guys and girls treat each other less than kindly, more as conquests or notches on a belt than fragile human beings. Hecocks says, “The ‘Preoccupy’ music video is an observation and an introduction to the scum and slime punks of L.A. We exist.” It’s not a joke about getting rejected over and over, coming on strong and feeling entitled as a “man” that eventually some girl will say yes. Hecocks hopes to encourage self-improvement, acknowledging scumbaggery and rising above it. He adds, “What are we trying to gain? Why do we keep doing these things? Why are we intentionally hurting other individuals for a temporary preoccupation? But most importantly, how can we be better?”
