After his March appearance at the El Rey Theatre, U.K. indie singer Jake Bugg returned to L.A. on Tuesday night, this time revisiting the Wiltern’s stage. Bugg is currently supporting his third album “On My One,” released in June.
A lot has happened for the 22-year-old since he first rushed the scene as a teenager just three years ago, landing himself a double-platinum-selling record. It wasn’t that long ago, back in 2013, that Bugg surprised a sold-out audience at Hollywood’s Troubadour with his vocal maturity and timeless folk rock sound. He was an anticipated up-and-comer making waves with stoic performances and newly discovered musicality.
While his second album didn’t quite earn the enthusiasm he first received, this new release seems to be a return to what Bugg does best, making music for no one but himself. Although those previous songs drenched in patriotic angst and of troubles in the slumps, have been replaced with more emotional themes, the crowd packing the walls of the Wiltern witnessed together another memorable step in this young musician’s journey.
Bugg started the night confidently, giving his fans what they wanted with “Two Fingers” as the crowd’s hand gestures shot into the air without prompting. “Trouble Town” and “Messed Up Kids” were other earlier tunes that resonated familiarity. Bugg wove in his newer genre variety of songs including rock sounding “Love, Hope, and Misery”, folky ballad “On My One” and softer country tune “The Love Were Hoping For”.
was supported by fellow British group Syd Arthur.
