Night on Broadway, the one-day festival that drew an estimated 60,000 to historic downtown Los Angeles last year, returns for a third year on Saturday, Jan. 28, with a multi-venue, multi-discipline entertainment lineup headlined by Mayer Hawthorne on the main outdoor stage.
The event, now the flagship of Councilman José Huizar’s “Bringing Back Broadway” campaign, spans seven city blocks and 10 venues (including many of the old halls in the historic theater district) and includes live music, dance, visual arts, food, games (dodgeball, as well as carnival) and kids’ stuff.
In addition to Hawthorne, the highlights of the outdoor stage at Olympic Boulevard include hip-hop vets Rodney-O & Joe Cooley, Las Cafeteras, the Oingo Boingo Dance Party and more.
Besides the big-stage fare — and the fact that the event is free and all-ages, there’s a lot to like about Night on Broadway:
► The historic Orpheum Theatre will host “The Advent of the VJ,” with interviews and demonstrations from prominent Angelenos who do live visuals at music events.
► The Echo’s popular weekly Funky Sole dance party moves to the Globe Theatre with resident DJs Clifton (aka Soft Touch) and Music Man Miles, along with guests.
► L.A.-based IAMSOUND curates an immersive night of music, dance and visual art at the Los Angeles Theatre, including a performance by Minneapolis-bred songstress Morly. Oh, and there’s a secret guest who’ll put a smile on your face and make you dance.
► The ear-bending crew from the internet radio/DJ collective Dublab takes over the Theatre at Ace Hotel for a night of electronic experimentation and visuals.
► Comedy and music commingle at the Palace Theatre, where costumed crazies PPL MVR finish off the night. (There’s a black light art installation too.)
► The Viva! Presents-curated outdoor stage has a crop of emerging artists, highlighted by the not-to-be-missed Thee Commons, along with SadGirl, Post Life and Dent May.
► Just short of its 99th birthday, the Million Dollar Theatre hosts “Recalling the Golden Age (Recordando la Epoca de Oro),” with tributes to Pedro Infante, Antonio Aguilar, Jorge Negrete and José Alfredo Jiménez, along with mariachi, swing, mamba and go-go dance music.
► KCRW DJs do battle in a Silent Disco Sound Clash. Maybe we’ll start a betting line.
► Artist William Close will bring his Earth Harp — featuring 200 feet of strings running from the street to the top of the 12-story Beaux Art State Theatre.
► There’s a dodgeball cage match.
► There’s a Ferris wheel.
There’s more, of course. And because we love giving you set times for things, they are listed below in plain text, subject to change.
