Salt Petal, the purveyors of polyglot folk-pop who are as comfy opening for Kinky as they are rubbing elbows with a bunch of indie-rockers, are returning in April with their first album since 2013’s “Sea Monster.” “Rare Hearts,” their latest slab of their tropicalia-cum-surf music, will be out April 28; it was produced by Eric Lilavois (Saint Motel, Surfer Blood) and mixed by Portland-based L.A. ex-pat Raymond Richards (who produced the previous album). The brisk and deceptively upbeat first single “Telephone” features Autumn Harrison on vocals and keyboards, Rodrigo Gonzalez and Fabio Santana de Souza on guitars, Evan Chudnow on bass and Hiroo Nakano on drums. Gonzalez’s lightning riff is indeed something to call home about, even if, the band told The 405, where the track premiered: “‘Telephone’ is about being defiant and trying to wise up after having been lied to. Personal deception. But in an upbeat fun way. We were thinking a little about Chuck Berry songs and the B52s.”
