With her 2016 album “Promise,” singer-composer Emily Wells took her chameleonic art-pop to a new level, her meticulous arrangements and passionate vocals riding orchestral-electronic clouds of production into the mystic. The New York-based multi-instrumentalist is known for molding her compositions into new, surprising forms when she plays them live, which makes Wells’ “In the Hot” EP, out Friday, virtually a beast of its own. Technically a B-sides release, the EP features three live recordings — “Antidote” and “Pack of Nobodies” from “Promises” and “Symphony 1 In the Barrel of a Gun” from 2008’s full-length “Symphonies: Dreams Memories & Parties.” The remaining tracks, made the during the “Promise” sessions, show the enormous depth of her artistry — and Wells’ propensity for channeling her fever dreams in ineluctable, genre-defying ways. Stay for “I’m No Heroine” at the finish.
