Cold War Kids impress with new material

En route back from my Arizona vacation on Saturday night, I detoured to Pioneertown to catch Cold War Kids’ set at Pappy & Harriet’s. It was the second date in a mini-tour the Long Beach quartet is doing to test-drive new songs from its forthcoming third album, “Mine Is Yours” (due Jan. 24 on Downtown). If their show the night previous in Pomona was rough around the edges (or so I was told by people I trust), Saturday’s was a hit. Nathan Willett and mates played eight numbers from the new album; the fresh material is more muscular and makes some of their old songs sound almost spindly. Highlights for me were “Skip the Charades” and “Upside Down” – you’ll hear these songs soon enough. [Previously: “Louder Than Ever.”]
