Since saluting (and seducing) Los Angeles with the “Summertime” EP last July, electro-pop siren Luna Shadows has continued to work with producer-songwriter Thom Powers (of the Naked and Famous), turning her meditations to the treacherous terrain of relationships. On two new singles — “Thorns,” released last month, and “Cheerleader,” released in February, the singer-songwriter (born Natalie Angiuli) looks at things from both sides. “‘Thorns’ is about the ultimately ephemeral nature of all relationships and my difficulty indulging them with acute awareness that inevitably they will be taken from me,” she says. And on “Cheerleader” she acknowledges her role “riding on your coattail” yet vows that eventually she “will be the one to change the game.” The twinkling, atmospheric production elevates her diary entries above mere scribbles; even in a genre overcrowded with drama-princess confessionals, she continues her bid to be a rose amid thorns.
