Ever stand on the edge of the Grand Canyon and just slowly savor the panorama? The new, self-titled EP from L.A. alt-rockers DreamVacation feel that wide-screen. The follow-up to their 2015 debut EP, “DreamVacation” suggests a future filled with hope, resolve, even peace, even if it seems, as the first single suggests, we live in a “Thin World.” “Our past releases seemed to focus a bit more on the loss of things,” the band says, “while with this EP there’s more of a reckoning of what is out there to be found.” That sense of discovery is articulated in DreamVacation’s chiming guitars, tasteful atmospherics and Ray Silva’s yearning vocals.
On “Breaking Your Heart While It’s Still Beating,” Silva sounds like a certain stadium rocker, and the closing track “The Same Love” is a burner that the singer says was originally titled “Twin Peaks.” “I wrote the lyrics while I was re-watching the series .. David Lynch is the man! And his character Laura, damn, that girl loves with a profound kind of pain in secrecy,” Silva says. “I think Laura ascends all that pain with promiscuous sex and abuse of drugs and alcohol, basically with trouble. At the end, she’s set free when her spirit lets it go. It’s absolutely beautiful.
“The song itself is about betrayal and secrets and how those things don’t diminish love. Although they do make that love tragic. Our love for someone can be the same no matter what we may do or say or do not say. If we really really do love. And if we carry it with pain. I believe the heart holds secrets with love. I also believe we have to let those things go now and then.”
