Ears Wide Open: New Language

New Language

The high-octane rock of New Language is the brainchild of singer-guitarist Tyler Demorest and bassist Matt Cohen, both whom made similarly heavy music in the L.A. quartet Kiven. The embarked on the project in 2016, working (as their previous band did) with producer Tony Hajjar, drummer for At the Drive-In and Gone Is Gone. Only a few months after their first show, they landed a slot supporting The Used on tour, and their time in the studio yielded the full-length album “Come Alive,” released in March. They are following that release with a new EP, “Everybody Screams,” a four-pack of post-hardcore fury that will come out next month during their residency at The Satellite. They called on producer Alex Newport (Bloc Party, Mars Volta, At The Drive In, City and Colour) to bottle their rage, and the EP’s title track is all bulging veins and pummeling drums. And with an unsettling video, to boot. “Times are strange right now,” the band says. “We could all benefit from taking a step back and realizing we all have problems, we all have opinions, and we’re all not always right. Sometimes the best path forward is to stop trying to rationalize perspectives you don’t understand and pursue the humanity we all share … unless you’re a Nazi.”
