There aren’t enough colors on the wheel to describe “Calm & Modern,” the kaleidoscopic new EP from Southern California quintet Fellow Bohemian. The band — Alex Bostelman, Jeremy Brock, Greg Anderson, Frank Campos and Joel Hodson — take elements of West psych-pop and post-punk-derived ’80s music to create a buoyant vibe marked by soaring choruses, tight guitars and tropical rhythms. Thanks to the work of producer Jonathan O’Brien, who worked with the band in his Music Box Studios in Fullerton, precious little gets lost in washes of reverb — at times Fellow Bohemian recall a more cinematic Cayucas, at others the finer moments of Real Estate, and at still others some ’60s luminaries. (They did turn our heads with a live cover of “Pictures of Matchstick Men” earlier this year.) “Calm & Modern,” which came out Friday and is the follow-up to 2014’s “Wild” EP, is like watching a time-lapse of a California sunset; sit back and enjoy.
