Low Hum, the name for the psychedelic rock explorations of Collin Desha, releases a self-titled debut EP on Feb. 23 via Chain Letter Collective. It’s five songs for the cinema of the mind, informed by the Hawaii native’s love of the ocean, longing for something beyond the temporal and keen knack for guitar sounds that get under the listener’s skin. That latter predilection is evident in the bristling opening of “Nebraska,” a tome for those who are no longer in the songwriter’s life.
The gorgeous video for “Nebraska,” directed by Raechel Zarzynski and filmed by Irina Garaiacu, follows Desha from the ocean to downtown to Chinatown. He is alone with his thoughts — or is he? Are we ever really alone? Do the people who’ve touched our lives ever really leave? Zarzynski’s languid narrative, along with the melancholic song’s big, slow groove, makes us wonder.
Desha says “Nebraska,” the lead track on the EP, took shape while he was on tour playing with James Supercave. In the back of the tour van, “I was very inspired by the country, most of it I had never seen, and loved making music in a new location everyday,” he says. “Toward the end of the tour I had some family who passed away, and I found out right before we had to drive from Texas to San Diego, so it was a lot to deal with while confined to a van. Luckily I was with great people and naturally the song took on a lot of the emotions I was processing.”
