Tune-Yards (often stylized as tUnE-yArDs) may sound like a full band but the truth is that it’s merely all the intricate workings of one talented woman named Merrill Garbus. Long before one-woman looping orchestras such as Glasser and Oh Land came along (but after the force of nature known as Theresa Andersson), Garbus was already extensively touring and performing the material from her 2009 album “BiRd BrAiNs.” Her sound has been described as “a patchwork of sound snippets” which incorporates elements of folk, R&B and experimental beats by way of snare drum, microphone stand, ukulele, vocals, and sometimes bass guitar. Combining the DIY approach to her last album and officially recruiting bassist, Nate Brenner, “w h o k i l l” is slated for release on April 19 via 4AD. Garbus’ sophomore effort will not only have a sound inspired by her current residence in Oakland but also offer a vibe that is a combination of her live shows and work in the studio.
