Angelique Kidjo has radically re-imagined Talking Heads’ landmark 1980 LP “Remain In Light,” taking this rock album that was influenced by Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat and bringing it back to Africa. Working with Grammy-winning producer Jeff Bhasker, the global pop star has taken the album and pumped it full of her musical roots, with vocals in native Benin languages, huge horns parts and explosive percussion. The album, which is out June 8, features appearances by Tony Allen (Fela Kuti’s drummer/musical director), Ezra Koenig, Blood Orange, Antibalas horns, Magatte Sow from the “Black Panther” film score and more. Her upcoming L.A. concert is one of just a few dates on which she will be performing the album.
