Her big vocals and big beats sounding even larger in the Fonda Theatre, Bishop Briggs regaled a sold-out crowd in her adopted hometown Friday night with songs from her debut album “Church of Scars.”
She opened with her latest single “White Flag” before pausing to marvel at the scene — playing a venue she’s always dreamed of playing, and selling it out at that. Later, she noted that she had worked on the album with Dan Reynolds from Imagine Dragons, praising him for his work for the LGBTQ community. In solidarity she had a box at the merch booth, where people could make donations to GLAAD. “The only thing I care about more than music is equal human rights,” the singer said. “And the fact the we’re living in a day and age where that doesn’t happen is bullshit.”
Included in Briggs’ set was her cover of INXS’s “Never Tear Us Apart” (30 years old this summer), which appears on the “Fifty Shades Freed” soundtrack.
She performed an unreleased song, “Baby,” to start the encore, then ended the concert with her breakout hit “River.”
Matt Maeson, playing his first tour with a full band, opened the show with songs from his new EP, “The Hearse.”
Setlist: White Flag, Wild Horses, Tempt My Trouble, The Way I Do, Be Your Love, Lyin’, Never Tear Us Apart, Water, Fire, Hallowed Ground, Hi Lo, Dream. Encore: Baby, River.
