The third and most hi-fi album from La Luz, “Floating Features” came out last week on Hardly Art. It was written after guitarist Shana Cleveland, bassist Lena Simon, drummer Marian Li Pino and keyboardist Alice Sandahl moved to Los Angeles, a place they found inspiring for its unique blend of beauty and corrosion, spirituality and vanity. Here, lyricist Cleveland found herself experiencing vivid dreams and nightmares involving giant insects and shadowy figures, which she did her best to capture and turn into harmony-driven surf-noir songs with the band. After working with fuzz-master Ty Segall on 2015’s “Weirdo Shrine,” the band decided to record “Floating Features” in a more upscale studio in Nashville where they could take advantage of an arsenal of instruments and fill the album with little treats for headphone listeners.
