It has been a mean five years since folk singer Kieran Leonard sauntered about the dark alleys of Los Angeles, and yet his release “Good Luck Everybody” carries the ghost of the angel city within its lyrical fates. A whirlwind romance with Laurel Canyon cultists, noisy apparitions, a near-death experience in the Mojave, and Jim Morrison’s Mulholland sex den all pepper the album throughout. Briefly a darling of the KCRW set, Leonard has been newly canonized as Saint Leonard’s Horses since.
In an interview we only recently came across, Leonard tracked his L.A. exploits.
This week, Leonard released a new video for “Well Well Well,” the lead track from “Good Luck Everybody” (which was recorded in recorded in Stanley Kubrick’s old mansion).
Since the album’s release, Leonard has been plying his trade in England, with appearances at Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, touring with the likes of Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams and Father John Misty (for whom he opens next week). The third of June will see him open for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Patti Smith in Victoria Park, pretty heady company for a lad who was living in a derelict church in Yorkshire not long ago.
