Las Cafeteras

Six-piece Chicanx band Las Cafeteras filmed the video for “Tiempos De Amor” in Oaxacan restaurant Guelaguetza, using movement to tell a story of love that conquers all obstacles, including, especially, borders. The song is from 2017’s “Tastes Like L.A.,” a socially conscious album that suggests political messages are best experienced by joining hands and dancing together. And when you can’t dance, wearing the right T-shirt can make an impact too, as seen earlier this month when Trump called out DFL Rep. Keith Ellison for wearing a Las Cafeteras shirt to a rally.

Teaming up again with Bracero Productions, who also created the video for “If I Was President,” Las Cafeteras enlisted urban Afro-Latinx dance crew Contra Tiempo to bring the song’s emotion to life. Choreographer Ana Maria Alvarez enthusiastically conceived this mix of (in her words) “Salsa and partner dancing, which is an embodiment of radical joy — while also using abstracted movement to play with ideas of power, gaze, longing and engagement!”
