Two sentences from Wednesday night:
■ “Weird Al” Yankovic and his accordion joined Weezer onstage at the Forum to assist in their cover of Toto’s “Africa.”
■ Forty miles to the southeast, Toto was headlining the Pacific Amphitheatre at the Orange County Fair, and after ending their 15-song set with “Africa,” the band came back for a one-song encore … of Weezer’s “Hash Pipe.”
If only these moments could have been beamed to fans at the opposite venue.
At the Forum, Weezer’s theatrical night featured pyrotechnics, wardrobe changes, cover songs, snippets of cover songs and a small, secondary stage in the middle of the venue from which Rivers Cuomo peformed “Island in the Sun” and A-Ha’s “Take On Me.”
The Pixies preceded the headliners with an all-business set that included a typically big sing-along to “Where Is My Mind.” Sleigh Bells opened the night.
Weezer setlist: Buddy Holly, Beverly Hills, Pork and Beans, Undone (The Sweater Song), Hash Pipe, Perfect Situation, My Name Is Jonas, El Scorcho, In The Garage, The Good Life, Happy Together (The Turtles, with Green Day’s “Longview”), Keep Fishin’, Island In The Sun, Take On Me (A-Ha), Burndt Jamb, (If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To, Feels Like Summer, Africa (Toto) Encore: Susanne, Say It Ain’t So (with Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”)
