Ears Wide Open: CLUB ORO

CLUB ORO

CLUB ORO commenced as a collaboration between Cassandra and Connor Cronin, a sibling combo “reared in the Bay Area during the popular apex of hyphy music and indie rock,” per their bio. After moving to L.A., the duo evolved into a collective of seven core members who they spent close to a year recording after-hours at a studio in Eagle Rock.

The first single to emerge is “Time As Hypnosis,” kicking off with a synthy dream pop-vibe over Connor’s vibrant bassline, then flipping the script into a jazzy retro groove with funky guitar as Cassandra’s vocals flip too, shifting from Cocteau Twins seriousness to more of a Gwen Stefani playfulness. The ever-shifting sound of the track is engaging and plays against the dystopian lyrics before culminating in a breakdown punctuated by a crowd whooping and clapping. It’s like having two trippy songs going through your head at the same time, and your ego applauding your brain for synchronizing them so well.
