Noelle Scaggs is known for her outsized voice and charisma in pop staples Fitz & the Tantrums, a steady gig that followed an early career that saw her showcasing her vocal talents with Dilated Peoples, the Black Eyed Peas, Quantic and the Rebirth, among others.

Her new solo single “Great for You” belies the frolicsome image she projects with Fitz. “People are used to seeing me as this very energetic, fun loving woman on stage,” the South Pasadena native says. “They rarely get to see the more emotional side of me. With ‘Great For You,’ I hope to give listeners a peak into my own personal journal, my vulnerability, my experiences.”

The single is au courant alt-pop, which is to say the more you like uppercase production, the greater “Great for You” will be for you. The tune is a collaboration with L.A.-based trio BRÅVES, comprised of brothers Thorald and Issac Koren along with producer Johnny What. But it’s not hard to imagine an equally evocative stripped-down version (or even an arrangement that plays outside the lines), with Scaggs laying bare her emotions.

While Fitz & the Tantrums work the follow-up to their third album, released in 2016, Scaggs has been working with various collaborators in Nashville and L.A. on her solo music.
