Quintessentially cool and confident in its message of love, “Overload” is the catchy title track from Georgia Anne Muldrow‘s latest record, released in October by Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint. “I’m there for you like air,” she sings as the song comes to a dizzying crescendo of voices, beats and keys, leaving the listener with a nice head-spin of good feelings from this tune about “the process of building loving relationships in spite of the malfunctions of Western society,” says Muldrow. Credited (though not on the scope that she perhaps deserves) as a pivotal force in the last decade’s wave of retro-futuristic jazz/hip-hop/soul fusion, this latest album is a departure for Muldrow, as it revolves around a bevvy of collaborations, including “Overload,” which was produced by Mike & Keys.
A chance encounter at Harun Gallery, her favorite coffee shop, with designer Capricorn Clark of Harun Creative led to their collaboration on the “Overload” music video. “I knew Capricorn had a passion for design (I had no clue that she was a legend but boy did I learn),” says Muldrow of the first-time director. In turn, Clark was inspired by all that is Muldrow. In Clark’s words, “Aretha Franklin kept coming to mind, and an image of her in her dressing room kept coming back to me, so I built a world around that. Georgia is a huge being. She emotes this light, but she isn’t aiming for the spotlight, so I had to bring the light to her.”
