Video premiere: Susy Sun, ‘Calling You the Same’

On “Heart of Gold,” the opener to her forthcoming album “The Way the Wind Blows,” singer-songwriter Susy Sun lays out the backdrop for her songs of frustration, heartache and self-doubt. She moved from Seattle to L.A. She changed her name. She made a record that nobody liked. She was the target of “hateful words.” In the end, though, she clung to the belief that “no one can take away your heart of gold.”

Her single “Calling You the Same” comes from that same heart, only here it is jilted, witnessing a former lover who’s already in a bounce-back relationship while she pines away. It’s a retro-pop number produced by Grammy-winning Dennis Herring and featuring a string and flute arrangement by Alexander Rudd.

The music video harks to the mod, mod world of the 1960s. Filmed in Super 8 and directed by Giraffe Studios (No Parents and Midnight Sister, among others), “Calling you the Same” takes the classically trained pianist’s heartache and makes it feel like a pop museum piece.

“I have been a fan of Nicky and Juliana’s at Giraffe Studios for quite awhile,” Sun says. “They are a sister duo and I admire their creativity and work ethic. They built an entire set for the shoot and dressed me head to toe with some help from Flying Apple Vintage — inspired by late ’60s style (Twiggy/Sharon Tate). How fun it was to turn a nostalgic and difficult memory into a dreamy and empowering piece of art.”
