A special performance by the Sun Ra Arkestra — with the ensemble led by 94-year-old Marshall Allen performing a live score to the 1974 Afrofuturist film “Space Is the Place” — is among the additions to next month’s Red Bull Music Festival Los Angeles.
It’s part of the fest’s Center Channel Film Series taking place from Feb. 8-20 at the Ukrainian Cultural Center. Also added to that series are drone metal pioneers Earth and New Age musician Iasos (who will give an audiovisual performance with projections during February’s full moon).
Various screenings of music-centric films highlight the Center Channel lineup. Included: the punk documentary “The Decline of Western Civilization;” Ava DuVernay’s debut “This Is The Life” on the open mic nights at the Good Life in South Central L.A.; the live concert film “Wattstax” documenting the 1972 Stax festival at the L.A. Coliseum; and the camp classic “Desperate Teenage Lovedolls” (which features then-teenage Jeff and Steve McDonald of Redd Kross).
Previously announced performers include Robyn, Rae Sremmurd and San Cha and more.
