Giant Killer Bats is the new solo venture from McCoy Kirgo, and the music is not as menacing as the name.

Kirgo, once part of the creative core of the late, lamented L.A. rockers Talk in Tongues, takes inspiration from ’90s indie guitar pop for his new direction. “I had an epiphany while listening to the Sundays last summer, and that took me down an inspiring wormhole while writing all these songs,” he says of the material on GKB’s forthcoming EP.

Giant Killer Bats’ first single “Static” soaks its heartache in jangling guitar and an ebbing melody reminiscent of Oasis (only sung in a higher register). Kirgo wrote the song after reaching out to an ex and hearing nothing back.

The EP was made with producer-engineer Jacob Munk (ex-Hunny) and features, among others, drummer Bryan De Leon (The Drums, Albert Hammond Jr., among others).
