Video: HOTT MT, ‘Angel’

Besides making mesmerizing, psychotropic pop, L.A. duo HOTT MT are known primarily for two things: that long-ago pilgrimage to knock on Wayne Coyne’s front door in Oklahoma and running the sometimes star-crossed underground performance space Non Plus Ultra.
The duo of Ashi Dala and Spooky Tavi (Ashleigh Allard and Nick Logie, when they’re not hosting musical séances) seem as content on the fringes as fans of experimental music are to have them there. This week, HOTT MT (which stands for Hour of the Time, Majesty Twelve) released their third album, “Earth on Heaven,” a more stripped-down affair than their overly luxuriant 2017 full-length “AU.” In between, they released a batch of Enya covers, which serve as much of a sonic reference point for the new album than anything in their catalog.
The new album was made in a week at Logie’s grandparents’ house on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. The duo explains that the house was vacant and about to be sold, but was still filled with artifacts from his childhood, and that informs the sense of nostalgia and spirituality on the record. The single “Angel,” which features Risa Rubin on harp, is based on a book written by Logie’s grandfather, a Rosicrucian and Anglican priest who wrote about spiritual psychic phenomena.
The video for “Angel,” made by the duo along with Drew Bienemann, explores those misty — and mystic — memories. As Allard sings, “I believe in the divine / They always have a good time, a good time.” Let the metaphysics party begin.
