Otherworldy garage-rock trio Ex Hex touched down to the earthly realm Thursday night at the Teragram Ballroom. Comprised of members of Helium, Autoclave and Wild Flag, the night was primed for a healthy dose of FM-era AOR jams. Opening their set with the spirited “You Fell Apart” off of 2014’s “Rips,” they also slipped in “Beast,” “How You Got That Girl,” with “Don’t Wanna Lose,” playing primarily in support of their latest album “It’s Real” released in March of this year. Between the heavy riffs and the interlocked power-stances of Mary Timony and Betsy Wright, a film crew of unknown providence took residence and had the crowd buzzing with rumors of a certain “Carson Daly.” Not to be outdone, Timony and Wright flexed their virtuosity with furious dueling guitars and call-and-response solos, igniting the crowd.
Local heroes FEELS opened the night with a post-punk punch and a sprinkling of mindfulness. Playing in support of their latest LP “Post Earth,” their message took a fatalist bent, proclaiming their love for the earth and the importance of our collective responsibility to save it. The tight rhythm section of bassist Amy Allen and drummer Michael Rudes gave ample room for guitarists Shannon Lay and singer/guitarist Laena Geronimo to let loose their sonic squall.
