Glossies is the musical vehicle for singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Erich Tomkinson, a Santa Barbara native who formerly made tunes under the name Dot Plaza and plays in the surf-pop band Dante Elephante. Tomkinson relocated to Echo Park after mudslides destroyed his studio and, last New Year’s Eve, he released Glossies’ debut album “Cactus What You Peach” via the U.K. cassette label Super Fan 99 Records.
The music is as playful as the album title. Glossies engage in bright guitar-pop that summons the ghosts of the 1960s and ’70s, and the album’s lead track “Never Die (Never Die)” gets an equally nostalgic treatment in the video by Robb L. Fidel. It’s kind of an animated postcard for the California life and the guitars that soundtrack it. Current mood: Never dying.
