Overjoy has been serving up heady dance music since 2014, after principals Lex Famous (singer-songwriter Alexis Moraites), Metty (Danny Attilano) and Hoff (Chris Hoffberger) met at the Splash House festival in Palm Springs. With Hoff having departed the project last year to pursue passions away from music, the duo of Lex and Metty are carrying on with their adventures in disco euphoria, combining Lex’s mesmerizing vocals and intoxicating melodies with Metty’s intricate production.
The hypnotic new single “Sey U Want Me Back” is Overjoy’s first as a duo and first new music since 2018’s “Nobody Dances.” On top of understated but complex rhythms and accented by a synth line that seems to sigh in resignation, Lex coos her melancholy away. The song, she says, was informed “by this repetitive dialogue in my mind during the time I was dealing with that ‘last leg’ portion of a failed relationship.
“It became a bit of a game,” she adds. “That’s probably why the melody has an essence of teasing.”
“Sey U Want Me Back” will be out Friday via Kauf’s ONE/HALF Records and is the first in a series of singles Overjoy has planned for the rest of the year.
