Ever feel like it’s a monumental struggle just to keep up? As if you’re being dragged unwillingly with your hands tied? Us too. That’s why Guards’ new video for the single “You Got Me” is relatable.
Main man Richie James Follin does a slo-mo trot through the heat and dust of the desert in the video, which is the work of Mortis Studios. “I have wanted to work with Mortis Studios on a project after seeing a few projects they did for my buddies Dead Heavens and Hideout,” Follin says. “They came up with this ‘Mad Max’ post-apocalyptic treatment, and we went out to Palm Springs and shot it. The song lends itself to the road movie genre in music and especially lyrical theme, so I thought the video fit it well.”
“You Got Me” is the retro-coolest moment on Guards’ “Modern Hymns,” their first full-length in almost six years and the follow-up to “In Guards We Trust.” The album, released in May, is a footloose pastiche of psych-pop, classic rock and new wave that would be suited for a dance club in any era. It’s Guards’ grooves that drag you along — willingly, from one rewarding nugget to the next.
