“It was this idea to make a beautiful thing out of very painful feelings,” Matt Berninger of the National says of “Walking on a String,” his new collaboration with L.A. singer Phoebe Bridgers.

The song was written for “Between Two Ferns: The Movie,” the new Scott Aukerman-directed film on Netflix that stars Zach Galifianakis. Berninger and Bridgers have a cameo in the movie as part of the bar band performing the song live (the scene was filmed in the Granada Hills bar Oh Grady’s). It’s an achingly melancholy tune that Berninger penned with his wife, writer Carin Besser, and musician Mike Brewer. It was recorded with guitarist Walter Martin  and drummer Matt Barrick (The Walkmen) and produced by Bridgers, Tony Berg and Ethan Gruska.

Berninger and Bridgers spoke with Variety about how the collaboration happened. The video was directed by Tom Berninger and Chris Sgroi, and the song is out via Dead Oceans.
