“Everybody wants something from me now / and I don’t want to let ’em down,” Billie Eilish sings on her new single “Everything I Wanted.” It’s the pop phenom’s first new music since March’s release of her album-of-the-year contender “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”

Is the 17-year-old drowning in her newfound acclaim? “I tried to scream when I was underwater / they called me weak, like I’m not just somebody’s daughter,” she sings, wondering if it’s just a dream, the same one — possibly a nightmare — in which she “got everything I wanted.” As the minimal ballad progresses, she awakens in the comfort of a protector. And, she wonders, “If I knew it all then / would I do it again?”

The song, recorded at both their home studio in Highland Park and on the road on tour this summer, was co-written by Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell, her sole collaborator and producer. It’s a tribute to their kinship. “This song is one my brother and I wrote about each other,” Eilish said. “No matter what happens, we always have been and will be there to make it better.”
