“DIIV, DIIV, DIIV!”

Chanted the sold-out crowd, champing at the bit in anticipation of the first of DIIV’s three-show Lodge Room residency on Friday night.

Despite the Lodge Room’s small stage, the New York four-piece made it work — kicking off their set with several tracks off 2019’s “Deceiver,” including “Horsehead” and “Skin Game.” Working back through their catalog, the band made sure to tap favorites “Take Your Time” and “Bent (Roi’s Song)” from 2016’s “Is the Is Are.” The result was pure magic, the crowd gently swayed with a wistful gaze locked on the stage. Despite their mellow nature DIIV played passionately, their expansive sound reverberating throughout, bathing the Lodge Room with luscious shoegaze.

Opening the night were Launder and Milly. Milly, a local L.A. five-piece played some slow shoegaze rock songs. With only a handful of singles and an EP to their name (the 2019 release “Our First Four Songs”), the band drew a surprising crowd.
