Premiere: Vanaprasta, “G-“

Whether they are unleashing dancefloor nuggets, carving holes in your ears with sharp indie rock or embarking on seemingly interplanetary psychedelic excursions, Vanaprasta are exhilarating. The L.A. quintet’s no-holds-barred approach works onstage, where Steven Wilkin’s arena-ready voice cuts through wicked guitar work from Cameron Dmytryk and Collin Desha and the rhythms of Taylor Brown and Ben Smiley. But they’ve been less bold when it comes to releasing music: A year ago they unveiled the “Forming the Shapes” EP and memorably covered LCD Soundsystem for charity, then decided to do more writing and recording rather release “Healthy Geometry,” the album they had finished. In due time, they said. Now comes the newest recording of Vanaprasta’s anthem “G-” (pronounced G-minus), one of their signature (if not most challenging) songs. Part blues scorcher, part psychedelic freakout and part prog-rock skronk, “G-” reflects five guys who shun the constricts of any genre – which, these days, is quite a feat of derring-do.
