Singer-songwriter-social activist Connie Lim, aka MILCK, rose to prominence on the strength of her singles “Devil Devil” (2016) and “Quiet,” the latter of which was performed guerilla-style at the 2017 Women’s March in Washington, D.C., and went viral. MILCK followed with an EP in 2018 and the song “A Little Peace,” a reaction to the mass shooting in Las Vegas that earned a vitriolic backlash in the comments of the YouTube video.
MILCK remains undaunted. She returned Friday with the new single “If I Ruled the World,” which these days sounds as much like a hashtag as a song title. It’s a dance of good intentions, with lyrics both serious and humorous. Topics on the table include equality, body positivity, the environment, ageism, sexism, racism, the news, health care and music education, among others. It’s not all heavy-handed, though, as she advocates for: “9-5 includes your nap time / And there’d be TED Talks at halftime,” she sings.
“I hope we created a tune that will keep you smiling or giggling as we continue to fight the good fight,” the songwriter says. “I wanted this song to capture all the huge and tiny moments of progress I wish for and already see in the world.”
The tune will appear on MILCK’s forthcoming EP, “Into Gold.”
