For almost a decade now, Lucas Nathan — working under the name Jerry Paper — has created album after album of thoroughly embraceable schmaltz. His sometimes-groovy, keyboard-saturated music is most reminiscent of ’70s soft rock, which, if you missed that era, was the occasionally palatable filler radio programmers played until they got to the next Steely Dan song. [Editor’s note: Dusts off old Seals & Croft cassette.]
A new generation has seemingly discovered how well such music goes with indica — maybe you, like others, found yourself virtually incapacitated, except for a half-smile, on to the couch for all of Jerry Paper’s 2018 album “Like a Baby,” especially the Weyes Blood track. Anyway, Jerry Paper returns May 15 with his second album for Stones Throw. It’s called “Abracadabra,” speaking of album titles from the past.
As the lead single “Quicksand” glides unobtrusively into your conciousness, you wonder again whether Jerry Paper is dead serious, kinda sincere or just pulling your earlobe. One thing’s for sure: It’s not gonna startle your cat.
