Born Fighters call themselves a “transatlantic power-pop Postal Service” — the long-distance melding of the minds and guitars of L.A.-based Peter Maffei (Cosmo Gold, the Blank Tapes, Pearl Charles, Sugar Candy Mountain) and London-based Luke Barham.
The spirit of ’70s guitar geekery (and we say that fondly) flourishes in the duo’s new single “Shadow,” a jangling, hooky, post-breakup song about finding one’s own identity outside the shadow of a former partner. The duo trade off vocals on the tune, and, yes, there is a nifty old-school guitar solo.
Maffei and Barham work by emailing files back and forth, but they get together once a year to record. “Shadow” was made in Highland Park, with two members of Valley Queen assisting: Mike DeLuccia on drums and Neil Wogensen engineering and mixing.
The single is out via Super Fan 99 Records.
