The euphoric mystery of a budding relationship — “Whatever it is I feel with you / I want it to last for a while” — plays out in painterly fashion on “Whatever It Is,” the new single from Loyal Lobos. The astral track is a refinement of the folk-cum-dream-pop made by L.A.-based Andrea Silva, a native of Bogotá, Colombia.
This week, Loyal Lobos announced that her debut album, “Everlasting,” will be out Aug. 7 via AWAL. Featuring songs in English and Spanish, the album was executive-produced by Teddy Geiger and features the artist’s continuing collaboration with producer, writer and multi-instrumentalist Evan Voytas, whom she met a couple of years ago. “It was an instant click,” Silva says. “We were coming up with the same lines. He used to have a tiny studio apartment in Echo Park, and that’s where we started making the album. I had to sit on his bed because there wasn’t enough room for a couch.”
The new single is the follow-up to “Criminals,” which came out last fall. “‘Whatever It Is’ is a song about a new love,” Silva says. “Meeting someone when you’re in the dark and learning to accept and experience new things without a traditional romantic narrative, and finding new excitement in things that seemed dull before.”
The song comes with a verdant video directed by Diego Trenas and filmed in her home country. “This video is a dreamy journey into mystery in the jungle of Colombia,” Silva says. “Horses have been a huge part of my life since I was very little. I wanted to portray my relationship with horses as a sign of freedom and power through a journey. We shot the outdoor scenes in Victoria, Caldas, pulling favors from all the neighbors who ended up as production assistants. We also got to shoot at El Teatro de La Candelaria in Bogotá with the help and artistic direction of Simón Uribe.”
