In March, Matthew Logan Vasquez told Buzz Bands LA that he and his now-far-flung bandmates in Delta Spirit had been working sporadically on new music for about two years. Today brought the first fruit of their labor.
The SoCal-born quintet — Vasquez, Kelly Winrich, Jon Jameson, Will McLaren and Brandon Young — released “How Bout It,” the first single from their fifth album “What Is There,” the band’s first full-length in six years. Due to be released Sept. 11, “What Is There” was recorded at Sonic Ranch near El Paso and mixed by Tchad Blake. Delta Spirit is dedicating it to the late Richard Swift, a friend of and inspiration to the band.
Far from the spindly but lovable folk-rock of their beginnings in 2008, Delta Spirit’s sound has matured into something bold and cinematic. “How Bout It” is a shimmering, widescreen anthem with a biting McLaren guitar solo — all heightened by the video treatment from director Michael Parks Randa.
In April, Randa and the band put out a call to cinematographers nationwide to participate in documenting Americans in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. About 70 responded, and from those Randa worked with 30 to stitch together the “How Bout It” video.
Says Randa: “The result is a celebration of the collaborative spirit of filmmaking, a successful experiment in safely navigating production during the pandemic, and a mosaic of America during this time.”
The album is coming out via New West Records. In addition, Delta Spirit has rescheduled all the dates on its ill-fated 2020 tour for next spring.
