In June, Manchester anthemic rockers Doves returned with their first new music in 11 years, “Carousels.” Today, with the single “Prisoners,” they announced that “The Universal Want,” their first album since 2009, would be out Sept. 11.

The official single, out today, is “Prisoners,” an excursion in the grandeur of Northern Soul that was produced by the band — twins Jez and Andy Williams and Jimi Goodwin — along with Dan Austin. “It’s about continually chasing something and not being satisfied when you eventually get it,” Andy Williams says of the single. “You’ve got ‘that thing’ and you find you’re not any happier. Be careful what you wish for.”
