A month after introducing their new album with an ambitious, quarantine-themed video for the sprawling anthem “How Bout It,” Delta Spirit returned today with a bouncy, concise new single “It Ain’t Easy.”

The song is the latest tease from the SoCal-bred quintet’s first album in six years, “What Is There,” coming out Sept. 11 via New West Records. It follows a hiatus they started in 2015 and then about two years of on-again, off-again work on what would become their fifth full-length.

“In 2015, we were getting along like family gets along,” frontman Matthew Logan Vasquez says. “That means sometimes we didn’t like each other too much. We were just growing apart. When we took a break and the band stopped, the friendships got an opportunity to come back. … Personality-wise, our band is five contrarians trying to agree on an idea. When your similarity is that you’re contrarian, it’s tough. But when things work out, it’s incredible.”

Or, as he acknowledges in the new single, “It Ain’t Easy.”
