Jason Chung has made a lot of music — four albums and two EPs — in a decade and a half working as Nosaj Thing. You just don’t hear his voice on any of it.

On Wednesday, with the announcement that Nosaj Thing has signed to the U.K. label LuckyMe (Bonobo, Ripperton, Machinedrum, Baauer), the 35-year-old L.A. native released the new single “For the Light,” a house music soundscape with a murmur of vocals.

“I’ve been experimenting with my own vocals since I started recording music, but I haven’t shared much of it,” the artist says. “And while most of my work is programmed, the majority of ‘For The Light’ is played live. I hope this song can bring positivity and hope during a time of isolation.”

Nosaj Thing, who has produced music for the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, Kid Cudi, Julianna Barwick, Toro y Moi, Busdriver and Nocando, is joined on the track by producer-composer Michael Andrews, aka Elgin Park, the solo artist and founding member of the Greyboy Allstars who has done vast work scoring for film (“Donnie Darko”) and television. While the pair were working on a film score, Chung asked Andrews to add bass and guitar to a demo he had written during the lockdown. The result was “For the Light.”
