St. Panther’s new EP “These Days”— like the video for “Highways,” a wild ride — arrives on Friday. In today’s QUARANTUNES, the Irvine singer-songwriter-producer confesses that the grocery store has become her most exciting place and shares a playlist with a “just damn” moment or two.
THE LATEST FROM ST. PANTHER
St. Panther’s new EP “These Days,” which arrives Friday via Ricky Reed’s Nice Life Recording Company and Nate Mercereau’s How So Records, reveals Irvine’s Daniela Bojorges-Giraldo as a meteoric talent who draws from soul, jazz, hip-hop and pop and nimbly wraps them into one electric package.
The EP was introduced back in April with “Infrastructure,” which found a home on the HBO show “Insecure,” and the anticipation for St. Panther’s six-song release built with the single “These Days” (on Michelle Obama’s playlist, no less) and “Real Magic,” her collaboration that appears on Reed’s new album, “The Room.”
“Highway” was the last pre-release single, a manifestation of the young singer-songwriter-producer’s own self-realization. “When writing ‘Highway,’ I was focused on how to communicate the feeling of embodying the journey of self-transformation,” she says. “Going forward guided by a new confidence and new shape you’re beginning to take on within yourself. It’s a song about moving forward on that journey full speed. … We’re operating beyond our means as artists — and sometimes we unearth an extremely exciting and new version of what we do. I see the road to that much like a highway.”
The visual directed by Spencer Ford amplifies that idea … and makes us wonder what Mom did with all our Hot Wheels stuff. Get ready for the full ride on Friday.
HOW ARE YOU HOLDING UP AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MANAGE THE ‘STAY AT HOME’ EDICT?
I’ve been holding up OK, thank you for asking. This has all been a welcome pause. I’ve been holed up writing for the most part, and aside from that, the grocery store has become the most exciting place.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO WHEN THIS IS OVER?
I can’t wait to hear a busy city or see music in person again.
ANYTHING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS PLAYLIST?
“Songs She Never Heard” by Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah is my favorite song in there. It’s the first one but in case you like to skip around make sure you listen to that one — damn. Just damn.
