Echo Park Rising, L.A.’s biggest neighborhood festival for live music, celebrates its 10-year anniversary on Sept. 26 with a 10-hour streaming event headlined by the Reggie Watts-John Tejada collaboration Wajatta and featuring the likes of Tropa Magica, Shannon Lay, Girl God, Naia Izumi, Trap Girl and many more.
It’s not the celebration Echo Park Rising — born from the ashes of the neighborhood festival Sunset Junction, which imploded in controversy a decade ago — had in mind, but with COVID-19 restrictions paralyzing live music and quashing large public gatherings, the webcast (co-presented this year by KCRW) will still toast the artists who perform there and the businesses that make it a vibrant neighborhood.
The free webcast, from Bedrock.LA, will mix live and pre-recorded sets. As with previous festivals, the effort is being supported by donations — either directly through PayPal or by becoming a monthly subscriber on Patreon. In addition, T-shirts with EPR’s 10-year anniversary logo (from Shepard Fairey’s Studio Number One) will be for sale.
The streaming fare promises to be wildly diverse. As part of their set, Beatie Wolfe & Mark Mothersbaugh will go through some of the postcards they’ve received as part of their Postcards for Democracy project. DJ FLVLA (aka Flula Borg) will appear with his time-traveling friends Ivan and Peter. The Bob Baker Marionettes will be performing; ambient string music will come courtesy of Paul Sukeena & Mary Lattimore; and the staff at local restaurant Masa even have a music video made up of sounds from the kitchen.
A slew of other musical artists are also on the bill, including Bad Jesus, The Birth Defects, Black Sabbitch, Broken Baby, Callie Ryan, Chase Petra, Clit Kat, Cosmo Gold, Deep Waters, Egg Drop Soup, Exploding Flowers, Fartbarf, The Gooms, The Great Sadness, Jagged Baptist Club, Joe Fletcher, Kat, Kid Row, Leroy from the North (Grand Ole Echo), Masa of Echo Park Crew, Mark Maxwell, Jackie Mendoza, Mod Pods, Panther Modern, Nate Redmond, Skullcrack, Skullcrusher, Slaughterhouse, Spare Parts for Broken Hearts, Speed of Light, Triptides, Veneer, Winter, WORK, Worn-Tin, Xandao and more.
In addition, local businesses will be doing live and pre-recorded broadcasts from their own channels, including Dublab 21st Anniversary DJ sets, bands at Baby Blues BBQ, El Prado, Portia Street Studios, American Barbershop/The 6660s, Stories Books & Café and Sunset Beer.
Businesses offering online specials include Bedrock.LA, iam8bit, Masa of Echo Park, One Down Dog, El Prado, Sage Plant Based Bistro & Brewery, The Strength Shoppe, Stories, Tilda California Natural Wines and more.
